Kayte Demont is the founder of one of my favorite Boston blogs, Mass Musings. Read on to find out all about her & her blog!
Everyone takes a different path to starting their own business. How did your blog begin?
I started Mass Musings in August of 2012, the summer after I graduated with an English degree from Gettysburg College. I also had a concentration in Studio Art and quickly became enamoured with sites like Tumblr where I could express myself through written word and images. So, I started Mass Musings as a blog (primarily fashion because that’s all I knew I wanted to include at the time) mostly as a collection of my favorite things.
Can you explain the concept behind Mass Musings?
The primary goal of Mass Musings is to provide inspiration for the creative individual. That phrase is not just the tagline, but truly the mission. I’ve hand selected a great tribe of contributors to share their content as well but I really try to keep everything consistent and of high quality. Together, I hope that we can really create a special community that appreciates all of the things that we do.
What was one of the biggest challenges that you faced when you started your blog? How did you overcome that?
My biggest challenge was probably the lack of resources. I followed all of these blogs that I aspired to be like, but I really had no idea how to translate my own vision into quality design on the web. My background in photo was film only so I started reading, researching and absorbing all of the information about blogging and living a creative lifestyle that I could. What I really love about blogging is the community that I’ve encountered. However, not all people are like that in this industry so I really try to mentor and give advice whenever I can.
Do you have any big goals or dream collaborators? In a perfect world, how would you like to see your blog grow in a few years?
I’ve been so fortunate to collaborate with one of my favorite brands, Free People a couple of times. That, in and of itself, makes me giddy. In the future, I’d love to see Mass Musings grow as a true community of followers with similar interests and creative vision. I love finding other people who share the same tastes and likes.
When you’re not working, what are you up to?
I also have a full time job as the Community Engagement Lead for Zomato in Boston. Zomato is a search and discovery app for restaurants with an awesome social media platform built in, all for foodies. Which, let’s be real, everyone loves food. If you’re not a foodie per say, you still have to feed yourself to survive so you might as well find a killer establishment that’s received great reviews by your friends and local food influencers.
Can you share three of your favorite writers & bloggers?
Writers in general? F. Scott Fitzgerald. Bloggers? The Relevance Report - Britt and I are friends in real life and I really respect what she does. Not only is she a great photographer with awesome style, but her writing is thoughtful, witty, and of quality. I also fan girl over Man Repellar and Song of Style, because duh. Rounding out my favorites would have to be Jamie Kidd (@jamienkidd on IG). Her style is flawless and her beauty is breathtaking.
