I discovered Taylor from Wherever The Wind a few months ago and she makes fantastic abstract watercolors and wood-burned necklaces. Her style of painting is a mix of patterns and free flowing color that give all of her pieces real character. Read on to find out more about her!
Being a small business owner myself, I love to hear the origin stories of other makers. When and how did you decide to start your own business? What is your creative background?
For me, creativity flowed very easily since childhood! I was very inventive, always jumping from one creative hobby to the next. It is simply how I was made! I am wired to process creatively whether it's through dance, writing, painting, or making jewelry! I ALWAYS had a dream of being a professional photographer or an artist so in September 2014 I decided to open an Etsy shop with the intention of exploring who I am as a creative, getting out of my comfort zone, and trying new things! For me, that is truly what it is all about; Personal growth and experience as an artist.
You make beautiful watercolor paintings and wooden necklaces. How did you decide to focus on this medium & abstract style?
Never in a million years did I think I would be making necklaces! Jewelry has never been something I was interested in. But one day I was in a craft store and took a stroll down the wood isle and I saw wood burning kits and pendants for the first time and I just couldn't resist! I had to give it a try and now I am absolutely in love! There are endless things you can create with such an easy to use, inexpensive tool.I love my wood burner and I highly recommend it!
As far as painting goes I have been painting with acrylic since I was a kid and it has always been hands down my favorite medium! So one day I just decided that I needed to get out of my comfort zone and try watercolors! It wasn't until recently that I had ever painted with them and I am totally hooked. It has been months since I painted with acrylic or oil paints.
Have you set any exciting goals for yourself or your business for 2015? What can we look forward to seeing from you!
Truly this shop is all about the learning process! My number one goal is simply to grow as an artist and in identity. To continue to discover my style, my passions, and who I am as a person!
However there are some exciting things to come very soon! Wherever The Wind is moving to Europe! This is a huge dream come true but my shop and I are stepping into the unknown and I truly have no idea what this adventure will have in store for us! There will be lots of surprises, no doubt. :)
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their own self-made business?
The best advice I can give to you if you have interest in opening your own shop is simply to be lighthearted and enjoy what you do everyday. Don't rush yourself but take time to process and if you make a mistake just brush it off of your shoulders and learn from it. Don't be too hard on yourself and HAVE FUN.
When you're not creating, what do you love to do?
When I'm not painting or making necklaces I am usually still up to something creative! I love dance, piano, guitar, and I love adventures with friends! You will always catch me outside. I love to hike, run, try new things, and explore new places! I'm honestly a very simple person. love to spend time with my friends and family. I hold a very high value to community and doing life with people.
Lastly, can you share three of your favorite artists?
My favorite artists are constantly changing! I could easily name some famous names but I would like to tell you some of my current favorite artists who are just passionate makers like me!
I adore the paintings of Meredith Bullock. She is a painter from Nashville, TN and her work is truly oozing passion and emotion. Another artist I am loving at the moment is Jenny Rose from Indianapolis! Her mixed media work is very refreshing and carries a beautiful simplicity about it. And last but not least the incredible Brynn Weiermiller from Athens, GA. She focuses a lot on the subject matter of water and ocean landscapes. Her paintings are absolutely breath taking!
