Makers To Know: Wild Plum Co

I've been following Cassie, the creative soul behind Wild Plum Co, for quite a while on instagram. She's so sweet and supportive and seriously talented!  You should go follow her and tell her she's awesome right now...I'll wait.

I asked Cassie all about her business, creative process, and plans for the future - read on to find out all about it!

Being a small business owner myself, I love to hear the origin stories of other makers. When and how did you decide to start your own business? What is your creative background?

Well, I opened in September 2014 and that summer I had been working with my friend Jade (@luckysageshop) tying friendship bracelets for her shop. She herself is a small business owner and she had such great advice/tips and was very successful with her shop, which essentially inspired me to open my own shop!

Around the time I was working for her I had stumbled across pictures of Weavings/ wall hangings and fell in love with them. I had never seen them before. I decided to to try my hand out in weaving and I liked it so much that I decided I wanted to open my own small shop just selling off Instagram and see how it went!  It was a fun way to express my style and interpretation on weavings. The same month I opened, I decided to be in a local handmade market, The Small Shop Roundup. After that, I decided I really liked it, and the small shop community was so nice and welcoming. I don’t have much creative background what so ever and this is my first “Creative Project” where I’ve just dove in. I’ve always enjoyed having a different/Funky style and I feel I can bring that out in my weavings.

You make gorgeous woven wall hangings - how did you decide to make weavings as opposed to any other product?

Thank you! It just goes back to my first answer. One day, I just dove right in and tried it and absolutely loved it and it has been great to me ever since.  I’ve always had a funky style and I feel like I can hone in on that and bring my different funky style out in my weavings.

Can you describe your creative process? How do you bring a design from start to finish?

Most of the time, I find yarn, Roving, or fibers that I love and start with the fringe and go up from there. Sometimes, I get inspiration from Starbucks holiday gift card packing or hand soap packaging! It’s true and it’s fun to get inspiration in the things around you and make something with your hands and have people actually like it! I like to somewhat have an idea of what I want it to look like in the beginning but mainly I just make it up as I go and let me mind wander and feel very satisfied when I have a finished product that I made with my own hands.

Have you set any exciting goals for yourself or your business for 2015? What can we look forward to seeing from you!

Oh, I am so happy you asked! I LOVE this question! I will be opening up a website at the Beginning of March. I currently take orders via email & Instagram. That can somewhat overwhelming at times and with the website I am hoping to skip that step of emailing back and forth with customers regarding cost and how to get a custom piece and having it all right there for you to view. The website will be nice for my customers to see pricing, grab a custom spot, or purchase a ready to ship items. Secondly, I am in the works with my really good friend Shantelle, for creating some really fun items! I don’t want to over share until we decide to launch these new products. So just be on the lookout for something exciting and fun within the next few months!

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their own self-made business?

My advice if you’re just starting out. Is just GO FOR IT. Don't hesitate and just jump into what you’re doing and give it your all. In that FIRST month when I started I decided to just do that small market I talked about earlier. The few weeks leading up to it and throughout the entire process, I had no idea what I was doing, I was totally freaked out, did not know what to expect, or how my weavings would do. I did it!! I felt so accomplished and proud of myself because I had never done something like that. I met so many awesome talented people and learned so much!! That gave me the little extra boost to just go for. So, if you are just starting out, stick to it and be your best self and work your butt off!

When you're not creating, what do you love to do?

I love to spend time with my family! For those of you who don’t know, I have two little boy toddlers that are 15 months apart- Sasuke and Noah. My main job is being their Mama. That keeps me very (understatement) busy! We like to go to parks, color, go for walks, run around and be crazy!  My husband is going to school full time and working. So, when I do get some time with him, we love eating good food, seeing movies and catching up on our favorite shows.

Lastly, can you share three of your favorite artists, bloggers, or makers?

Besides you? :) There really are SOOO many great, artist, bloggers and makers! It’s hard to just name three. Being a part of this small shop community had been amazing. You meet and get to see so many amazing people + their talents! I LOVE my good friend Evelyn from @evelynhaupt beautiful work , Sam from @sharptoothstudio has THE best banners and pennants, Kelsey from @HoneyandtheHive her paintings are AMAZING and some great quilting from Cherisa from @theblanketthief_ . There is so many though!!
